Bio
Alan Crarer has been involved in product development for over seven years.
A strong base of fundamental engineering knowledge was provided by the University of Calgary,
in Canada, where he earned his mechanical engineering degree. Subsequently, a diverse
selection of employers has supplemented this with a wealth of practical skills and rich experience.
Employers have included start-ups (such as Game Ready and Lightwave Medical), design consultancies
(such as Bridge Design, Moto Development and Frog Design) as well as established engineering-focused
corporations (such as Ballard Power the world leader in fuel cell technology).
Fields of practice have primarily been medical devices and consumer products.
Alans most recent permanent position was lead engineer, developing a physical-therapy
device with an emphasis on Industrial design and establishing a high-quality brand,
for Cool Systems/Game Ready.
Alan has held senior-engineering positions as well as
independent contractor and consultant positions (with varying levels of involvement, including advisory).
Products that Alan has designed have received a variety of awards.
He prides himself on creating elegant solutions that will please both the client and end-user,
and aims to diversify his skills and expand his knowledge working with dynamic
companies in various environments.
Skills
Engineering
Strengths include; ideation, concept refinement, proof-of-concept mock-ups, mechanical analysis and
functional design. Vast experience in chassis, mechanism and enclosure design, formed/machined/injection-molded parts design.
Hands-on experience in basic machining and fabrication.
Computer
Skilled in most Pro-E modules; advanced surfacing, assembly, sheetmetal, mechanica, intralink and piping.
Database, basic programming and web design.
Certifications
Registered Professional Engineer with APEGGA (membership #M58190),
WHIMIS Certified ('96).
